Alachua county, my county, has the highest countywide property tax rate and school tax rate in the state. It also has one of the highest SAT rates in the state. It also has the 18th worst dropout rate in the state. It also has an incarceration ratio above that of the state of Florida which is above that of the nation which is above that of any nation on God’s green earth.
At this moment, Alachua County has 1,661 inmates in the state prison system. Then there are another 1,000 in the county jail which currently has an annex under construction. Bear in mind that the average education level of the prison inmate population is the 6th grade and close to 80 percent of them have an addiction problem. It should also be noted that Alachua County ranks 19th in 68 counties in the state as far as commitment numbers to the state prison system.
To my mind, this is definitely a two tired education system designed to cater to an educated population where the economic engines are education, medicine and government. The question is why does it exist at all?
