Once again, it is a good article but begs the question and speaks to the symptom. The question is why do we have so many people serving life terms?
Is it because we are not a civilized society? Is it because we have precious little else to do other than kill each other? Is it because there are people out there that have served so many years behind bars that they qualify for none or precious few of the social safety nets out there? Is it because there are so many people out there that got caught up in Zero Tolerance for so long that they prisons have become a safe place that is home?
It will be interesting to see how this plays itself out with the increasingly constrained budgets. Will their safety net on the outside be cheaper than that of a prison bed?
