State budget cuts clog criminal justice system

The economic downturn is having an unanticipated effect within the criminal justice system. Not only are the prisons suffering from the budget constraints but it appears that in many cases prosecutors are ignoring potential cases as well as Public Defenders ability to defend because of reduced staffing.

In the long run, data for accurately determing trends, themes and patterns will be skewed downward. The question becomes how many of the serious crimes will not be properly addressed and just washed under the rug.
